Bert's BBQ Sauce (for Bob's Barbecued Ribs)

The best barbecue sauce ever. It is famously used within the family on Bob Ludwig's Barbecued Ribs. But it is also pretty dang good on chicken too.  The Bert's BBQ Sauce originally adapted from the 1963 Good Housekeeping Cookbook. Ratios are 1 recipe of sauce per package of baby back ribs.

1/4 c rice vinegar
1/2 c. water
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp French's mustard
1/4 tsp pepper
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 thick lemon slice
1 small onion, sliced
1/4 c. margarine or olive oil
1/2 c. ketchup
2 tbsp worcestershire
1 tsp liquid smoke

In a sauce pan, mix vinegar, water, sugar, mustard, pepper, salt, lemon slice, onion, margarine, and cayenne (optional). Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes. Add ketchup, worcestershire, and liquid smoke. Bring to a boil. Remove lemon now!
