Apple Strudel Pie
I loved this dessert when growing up. It's more like an apple strudel than a pie. The original recipe noted you could make it with pears instead.
Pie
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 c. shortening
4 eggs, separated
1 tbsp vinegar
milk
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon (nutmeg)
2/3 c. crushed cornflakes (start with 2 1/2 c. cornflakes)
5 c. sliced apples or pears
Glaze
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp lemon juice

- Sift the flour, sugar, and salt together into a bowl. Cut in the shortening and blend well.
- Put egg yolk into measuring cup and add vinegar, then milk to make 2/3 cup. Add to dry ingredients.
- Roll out 1/2 of the dough to 15"x11". Place in jelly roll pan. Cover with cornflakes and then fruit slices. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon (nutmeg) over the fruit. Pinch edges together.
- Beat egg white until stiff and spread over the crust.
- Bake in 400F oven for 40 minutes.
- While hot, drizzle mixture of 1 c. sugar and 2 tbsp lemon juice over the top.
